Tignanello has a rich history dating back to the 1970s. It was made by the Antinori family, particularly by Piero Antinori. At that time, the traditional Chianti Classico blend faced challenges, and the Antinori family sought to enhance the quality and reputation of Tuscan wines.
In 1971, the first vintage of Tignanello was produced. Notably, it deviated from tradition by including non-traditional grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. This innovative approach challenged the Italian wine regulations of the time, which required wines to be composed mainly of native grapes. Despite the controversy, Tignanello gained recognition for its exceptional quality and played a role in redefining Italian winemaking standards.
Today, Tignanello is recognized as one the premier Super Tuscan wines. It’s full bodied, fresh acidity with aromas and flavors of red and black berry, fresh herbs, all spice and a hint of vanilla. It’s has a wide range of pairs from meats to Italian past dishes.
